What should I be doing in the Garden this June?
This is crucial as temperatures rise. Aim for regular deep watering, especially for container plants, new plantings, and vegetable patches.
Plant Care:
- Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers (deadheading) to encourage continuous blooming on roses, summer bedding plants, and other flowering perennials.
- Pinching: Pinch outside shoots on tomato plants to encourage stronger main stems and fruit production.
- Staking: Provide support for tall plants like perennials or tomatoes to prevent them from collapsing under the weight of flowers or fruits.
- Feeding: Apply fertilizer to flowering plants and vegetables to promote healthy growth and bountiful harvests.
Harvesting:
- June is a time of plenty! Regularly harvest vegetables like lettuce, radishes, peas, and early potatoes. Enjoy your homegrown produce!
- Harvest soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries as they ripen.
- Thin out fruit on fruit trees to encourage larger, better-quality fruits.
Planting:
- You can still sow some fast-growing vegetables like beans, courgettes, and carrots directly outdoors for a late summer harvest.
- Plant out summer bedding plants to fill gaps in borders and create a colourful display.
- Sow seeds for late summer flowering annuals like nasturtiums, calendula, and nigella.
Other Important Tasks:
- Weeding: Keep on top of weeds to prevent them from stealing water and nutrients from your desired plants.
- Mowing: Regularly mow your lawn to keep it tidy and healthy. Water well during dry spells to prevent scorching.
- Pest and Disease Control: Keep a watchful eye for signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate action to control them.
By taking care of these essential tasks, you will help your garden thrive in June and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labour throughout the summer.
