April brings a welcome change for us, our gardens, and our birds! As migratory species return and breeding season begins, you’ll see more activity and variety than at any other time of year.
Here’s what to look out for, and how to prepare your garden to attract and support birds this spring.
Birds to Watch for in April
Swallows
Swallows return to the UK in April. Look for their long, forked tails, deep-blue backs, and fast, acrobatic flight as they hunt insects. They rely heavily on insect protein, so offering insect-based bird food can help supplement their diet, especially in cooler weather when bugs are scarce.
House Martins
Often confused with swallows, house martins are smaller with bright white underparts and shorter tails. They build mud nests under the eaves of houses and prefer protein-rich food. You can support them by keeping nest sites undisturbed and offering mealworms or similar foods.
Willow Warblers
These small, greenish-brown birds arrive in spring and can be heard singing from shrubs and treetops. They’re primarily insectivores, so insect-based foods will help, especially during early arrival periods when natural sources are limited.

Creating a Bird-Friendly Garden
To increase your chances of spotting diverse bird species, consider incorporating a few alluring features into your garden:
Native Plants
Planting native flowers, shrubs, and trees not only attracts birds but also supports local ecosystems. These plants provide shelter, food sources, and nesting sites.
Water Sources
Including a birdbath or small fountain encourages birds to stop by for a drink or a bath. Ensure you change the water regularly to keep it fresh and clean.

Natural Landscaping
Leave some areas of your garden wild with native grasses and wildflowers, creating habitats for insects and seeds that birds love
Nesting Boxes
Installing birdhouses can provide suitable nesting sites for many small species, such as bluebirds and chickadees. Make sure to choose the right style and size for the birds you wish to attract.
